Black and white photos have a nostalgic form that serves an intense flavour of countless memory.
All photos that were captured has their respective historical element, the camera is a tool that helps to freeze that very particular moment.
One day out of curiosity, I hold my grandparents photo album and randomly flipping through the pictures. To me, a family photo album gives me a sense of familiarity.
Maybe it was just me but indeed, you feel the connection within the people that you see in the photos.
What are they doing? Where are they? How do they look like? Why are they taking pictures?
Photo album is either like a chronological or non-chronological form of story that depicts real characters.
I wasn’t even born in that era. Yet, some of those photos and images deliver meanings to me. You could say that it’s love and family values but I am certain that it was more than that.
When you see photos of your family in their younger age, you resemble them to your current self.
With much ambiguity, you see how they live and what they did. You differ their lifestyle to yours.
Thoughts just running through you mind, yet you cannot not admit that it was an enjoyable process.
Photos can be naturally taken or a portrait with people posing in front of the camera. However they are, these photos imposes the development of society- they are kept as part of our history in the future, it can be privately kept as remembrance or they can be analyzed or interpreted, they can also be used as decorations, similar to paintings.
Some people may feel the unnecessary in capturing those little moments while some feel that it is important to keep them because they are part of us- they WERE part of us.
For me, one of the most prominent example is during Chinese New Year where everyone would gather around. This is a great opportunity to take group photo. As usual, there will be people who are unwilling to cooperate and people who are overly enthusiastic on smiling in front of the camera.
A picture worth a thousand words is indeed a wisdom quote that will never gone wrong. You may find people perceiving the same photo differently, just like how people view the world differently. They may possibly choose this particular angle to capture the world they wish to see while some may not go with the dominant angle and choose something that distinguishes them from the dominant ones. This applies on the photography- skills, lighting and editing are crucial but eventually a photo is valued or commodified based on the meaning, ideology, emotions and context that lies within the photo. It may be related to the photographer or just people from his/her external environment which greatly creates this sort of inspiration.
