I fear of having fear. Fear is almost unbearable. After watching “The Great Gatsby”, I have learnt that we can never repeat the past. Fear is almost like a deceiving subject in Gatsby’s life, he seems to be a person who is strong yet vulnerable on the inside. There was this tiny fear that captures him and encloses him in the trap of love.
“I hope she’ll be a fool — that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”-Daisy
I wonder to myself how in the end Daisy chose to let go of her past is a morale decision. She seems to be unaware the choice that she made, the guilt that she carry upon-“she has killed a woman by accident while driving Gatsby’s car, leading upon Gatsby being shot by the woman’s husband.” Daisy is the central conflict of the whole story, generating the complicated romantic relationship. Why is she in love with two guys at the same time? Fear of Gatsby, her past love as an untrustworthy guy yet fear of Tom, her husband as an disloyal husband. She break down and finally her daughter becomes the priority of the choice she made. Without attending Gatsby’s funeral, she cruelly left with Tom and her daughter
Gatsby was born from a poor family but has a very strong desire for his future. He claimed himself as God? Always confident of himself, courageous and obsessive on Daisy. He was someone prominent in society but richness doesn’t bring him anything, he lost his life, love and fame-basically everything. He was known the one that hits and run in the car accident but never will the public find out that the mistress, Daisy is the one that should be blamed. Remarkably, he did everything just for the girl, yet unappreciative is what he got. He is prone to be violent from the trigger of his past when Tom constantly remarks on his poor family background. Eventually, he is a nobody.
The first person narrator-Nick who has been someone that is excluded from the wealthy American lifestyle which gradually sickened him. He was first attracted to the myriad colours and wonders of parties, alcohol and pretty ladies but soon realize the ugliness of reality which bring upon friction, death and violence. The world of Gatsby is like a roller coaster ride, shadow of emptiness takes over his wealth. Nick himself faces a major breakdown. reveals the things he saw and encountered in a book on ‘The Great Gatsby’ .
The simmering lights, the upbeat music, the majestic mansion, the mysterious land of the rich separated from the poor, the greed, the obsession with money, fame and power are all described as the entities of that era.
Life still goes on just like a boat, someone drowns and someone continues the human journey. Even though some may still struggle to fight against the waves and current which bring them back to the past unconsciously.
